Well, the day has come, we are finally open! What we thought would be three months out of action, quickly turned into six. However, after plenty of hard work & at times frustration, we are back, bigger & better than ever.

For the moment we are just doing takeaway bottle sales. In the next week or two we will be able to have on-premise consumption of draught beer, bottles & food, as well as offering growler fills once more. We will have tables for patrons both inside & out, with a courtyard/beer garden to come later in the year.

We have four regularly changing draught taps, offering the craziest craft releases we can get our hands on. In addition, we will have a number of different growler fill options available at any one time. Our menu will consist of a variety of artisan cheeses, cured meats, charcuterie & preserves with more regular events involving beer & food matching.

GOOD BEER WEEK
After the roaring success of GBW last year, the week-long beer fest is back, bigger & seemingly better (is that possible?) than its inaugural installment. Its been a long time coming but we are now so very close to opening at our new location in Richmond, just a few weeks away in fact! Rest assured that as soon as our doors open we will be signing it from the rooftops!

GOOD BEER WEEK
After the roaring success of GBW last year, the week-long beer fest is back, bigger & seemingly better (is that possible?) than its inaugural installment. With so many great events happening, its hard to play favorites but the initial response for our own GBW event has been excellent & we hope to have a great turnout.

NEW RELEASES & FRESH STOCKS
FROM AUSTRALIA
Moondog Melon Gibson 330ml $4.50
First release in the mullet series of beers, this dedicated to Mel Gibson’s 80’s mane. A German inspired wheat beer, with touches of berliner weisse, from the use of lacto yeast, imparting a subtle, refreshing tartness. The use of watermelon works really well, its vibrant but unobtrusive & makes this release so very refreshing & drinkable.

Mornington Peninsula Imperial IPA 330ml $6.50
There was quite a bit of hype around the release of this in bottles & its safe to say that nobody has been disappointed. A robust US style imperial IPA, vibrant grapefruit aroma with candied orange & caramel malt on the palate & drying earthy, piney hop bitterness to finish.

FROM DENMARK
Kissmeyer Red IPA 500ml $11.00
What exactly defines a red ipa? What makes it any different to an imperial red ale, or india red ale? Who knows really? But here we have a red, malty, hop focused ale. Fruity hops on the nose, caramel & toffee malt with touches of sweet bread & honey as well but we can’t forget those robust hops on the finish.

Norrebro La Granja 600ml $20.00
Sweet style stout brewed with cold extract Mexican single origin coffee. Dark & roasty with notes of burnt licorice & a slight lingering sweetness.

Norrebro Julbryg 400ml $9.50
Belgian inspired strong dark ale, brewed with a number of spices. Rich, with notes of stewed dark fruit & spice.

Norrebro New York Lager Cans 330ml $5.50
US inspired lager style. Clean & crisp on the palate with a slight fruity hop edge & subtle, cleansing bitterness from the use of Cascade hops.

FROM JAPAN
Baird Morning Coffee Stout $18.00
Robust style stout brewed with Japanese Kokuto (black sugar) & Guatemalan coffee. Dark & roasty with a hint of sweetness & slightly acidic coffee roast.

FROM NEW ZEALAND
8 Wired Batch 31 500ml $18.00
Updated version of batch 18, an imperial stout brewed with Guatemalan & Ethiopian coffee & aged in American Oak for 6 months.

8 Wired Haywired 500ml $11.00
A bit of a change of pace for Soren at 8 Wired but he rightly points out that this isn’t your usual German/Belgian style wheat beer. NZ & US hops are used as well as a British Ale yeast strain.

Tuatara APA 500ml $10.00
New & improved version of the previous APA, this is actually an Aotearoa Pale Ale. Still exceptionally robustly hopped, however where the previous incarnation used US hops, this uses Pacific Jade, NZ Cascade, Nelson Sauvin & Wai-iti hop varieties.

FROM SCOTLAND
Brewdog Abstrakt AB:08 375ml $37.00
A blonde imperial stout you say, why not? Pours light & golden with notes of ash & iced coffee on the nose. The palate has a caramel, toffee sweetness with more iced coffee on the palate & a sweet finish.

Brewdog & Lost Abbey Lost Dog 330ml $21.00
Collaborative brew with one of the USA’s masters of barrel ageing. Stylistically this is a big, rich imperial porter with notes of toffee, raisins & coffee. There is added complexity & dark fruit character from ageing in Rum barrels.

Brewdog Paradox Isle of Jura 330ml $18.00
Its been a long time since the last paradox release & this is certainly worth the wait. Big, rich imperial stout aged in famed isle of jura whisky barrels. Expect plenty of roast & ash with oaky notes of vanilla & toasted coconut.

Harviestoun Ola Dubh 16yo $12.00
Bigger brother to the Ola Dubh 12yo, the brewery’s famed Old Engine Oil aged in the equally famous Highland Park whisky barrels. Chocolate, coffee & roast with toasted oak, ash & a touch of smoke.

FROM USA
Sierra Nevada Ruthless Rye IPA $5.00
A new release from the Chico based craft brewing institution & certainly one to savor. Hops & rye go together beautifully & this example is no different. Spicy rye & earthy hops combine seamlessly to produce a robust hop driven IPA with plenty of rye character.

Green Flash Rayon Vert 355ml $7.00
A Belgian inspired pale ale with a twist, the use of the brettanomyces yeast strain provides a brew that is constantly evolving. Light on malt but hop driven nose & palate with the brett yeast attributing an earthy, sour, fruit tingle like character. Taking a lead from the classic orval & similarly this has all the makings of a classic.

Sly Fox Phoenix Pale Ale Cans 335ml $8.50
Another craft beer in cans, always a welcomed sight. This is a robustly hopped US pale ale, with the canning ensuring exceptional hop freshness, despite the journey fro the US, which often kills bottled hop focussed styles.

Imperial Amber Ale, rich in malt character with notes slightly sweet caramel & toffee but balanced with an intense, drying hop bitterness on the finish from the use of Simcoe, Centennial & Citra hop varieties.

Clown Shoes Lubrication 650ml $20.00
Black IPA, Cascadian Dark Ale, American Black Ale, call it what you want but the marriage of dark malt & West Coast hops is unmistakable. Add to that the use of sweet orange peel to compliment the citrus fruit hop character.

Maui Coconut Porter Can 355ml $8.00
Craft beer nerds can’t seem to get enough of cans, despite the common misconception among many that they taste tinny. This offering is anything but, with amazing depth & richness combining dark chocolate, dry coffee roast & coconut.

Weyerbacher Blithering Idiot 355ml $12.00
Traditional style barleywine, exceptionally rich malt character with notes of fig & date that attribute a slight sweetness. The finish is long, rich & warming.

Weyerbacher Double Simcoe DIPA 355ml $11.00
Pretty self explanatory really, a DIPA brewed exclusively with Simcoe hops. Expect a smorgasbord of citrus, grapefruit, pine & resin hop character with malt providing a touch of balance.

Weyerbacher Hop Infusion IPA 355ml $10.00
An IPA with deep, rich malt character balanced with robust earthy, spicy & sharp citrus hop bitterness.

Weyerbacher Old Heathen 355ml $11.00
Rich, velvety & delicious imperial stout, with multilayered dark malt character that provides waves of complexity. Robust & roasty on the palate with a touch of dark sweet fruit & a drying dark chocolate & espresso finish.

Victory Prima Pils 355ml $5.50
A definite favorite & a perfect example of how pilsners & lagers can be amazing beers. Vibrant floral & spicy aroma with delicately balanced honey malt notes on the palate & robust earthy, spicy bitterness on the finish. Robust but impeccably balanced. An utter delight.

Victory Hop Devil 355ml $6.00
Another victory offering of amazing balance. Citrus & pine hop character on the nose, with rich caramel & toffee malt driving the palate & robust citrus, pine bitterness on the finish.

Its been a few weeks since we last checked in & things are certainly getting moving. Plans for the new store opening are coming along nicely. It is still looking like a March/April opening but for the first time since we moved, there is some real progress being made, which is very exciting! To add to that, we have a host of amazing new beers & if this is anything to go by, 2012 will be a huge year for us all!

NEW RELEASES & FRESH STOCKS
FROM CANADA
St Ambroise Russian Imperial Stout 355ml $12.00
Back for another year, this heady RIS is aged in Bourbon barrels for added oomph, not that it needed it!

Les Trois Mousquetaires Grand Cuvee Baltique Porter 750ml $23.00
Really pleased to see this beer back again, having flew under the radar last year. Exceptionally big & rich in its bittersweet roasted malt, bringing an abundance of layered dark chocolate & coffee notes.

FROM DENMARK
Amager Sinner Series Gluttony DIPA 500ml $15.00
The name says it all, this is a hop heads delight. Copious amounts of new world, high alpha hop varieties have been used to give a palate of diverse citrus fruits, lemon, apricot, orange & grapefruit. The bitterness on the finish is robust, piney & drying.

FROM JAPAN
Baird Jubilation Ale 633ml $17.00
From a brewery that is severely underrated comes this brew that is right up my alley & I suspect a heap of others. This is a festive seasonal brew, that is malt focused, brewed with candied figs & cinnamon. Yum, yum, yum!

FROM SCOTLAND
Brewdog Abstrakt AB:07 375ml $37.00
The next release in the series, an imperial style scotch ale aged in whisky casks. Expect rich malt of caramel, toffee with a touch of roast, fruity esters & smoky whisky character.

FROM USA
Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout 355ml $8.50
Inspired by the Imperial Stouts of old, brewed for the Russian Imperial Court, this beastly offering belies its size & is an utter delight. Multilayered dark malt richness, brings chocolate fudge, a raisin sweetness & dusty coffee roast to dry out the finish. There is also some hop bitterness that kicks in late to balance out the malt.

Bear Republic Pete Brown Tribute Ale 650ml $13.00
An American style brown ale with sugar, molasses & nutty notes, counterbalanced by robust hop bitterness on the finish.

Bear Republic Hop Rod Rye 355ml $7.00 & 650ml $14.00
An epic IPA brewed with 20% rye in the grain bill. Vibrant piney, bitter grapefruit hop aroma with the rye providing a spiciness on the nose & translating to the palate with a touch of oiliness to carry the big hop profile.

Bear Republic Racer 5 355ml $6.00 & 650ml $13.00
Very much a hop focused IPA. Pale & crystal malts employed to carry the robust hop character from the use of Chinook, Cascade, Centennial & Columbus varieties.

Bear Republic Red Rocket Ale 355ml $6.00 & 650ml $13.00
A modern, suped up, Americanized version of a Scottish Red Ale. Caramel & toffee malt with a touch of very subtle roast, vibrant fruity hop nose & robust bitterness on the finish.

Green Flash Barleywine 650ml $17.00
An exceptionally lengthy brew boil results in a malt driven ale of serious richness. Toffee malt & fruity esters with citrus, piney hops to balance & provide longevity in the cellar.

Green Flash Double Stout 355ml $7.00
An old world style stout, brewed with golden oats for a creamy, velvet like palate. Bittersweet dark malt & earthy hop character provides layers of complexity with high temperature fermentation adding some fruity esters.

Green Flash Hop Head Red 355ml $7.00 & 650ml $14.00
Described as a red IPA, a rich caramel & toffee malt base battles for supremacy & is ultimately dominated by truckloads of Columbus, Nugget & Amarillo hop varieties both in the boil & for dry hopping. Floral, fruity, resinous & piney in equal measures.

Green Flash Imperial IPA 650ml $15.00
This is a San Diego style IPA to the letter. A crazy hoppy, high gravity display of resinous, bitter hops.

Green Flash West Coast IPA 355ml $7.00 & 650ml $14.00
Another West Coast hop fiesta. Vibrant floral, citrus & grapefruit aroma with aggressive piney bitterness.

*NOTE THAT WE ARE OFFERING FREE DELIVERY FOR LOCAL CUSTOMERS IN RICHMOND & HAWTHORN

Its been a while! So long in fact that a new year is well & truly underway. And with that, we have plenty of grand plans & great beers lined up for everyone.

NEW STORE REOPENING
As previously mentioned we have moved locations but aren’t open for in-store trade as yet. While many of us know & love craft beer & the venues that promote it, we’ve had somewhat of a hard time convincing the new neighbours of its merits & the amicable, loveable clientele it attracts. As a result, the process of obtaining the appropriate permits & licenses has been slower than we anticipated. Regardless, we will persevere with our grand plans & you know what they say? Absence makes the heart grow fonder!

We hope to be ready for a grand reopening in March, subject to the powers that be. In the meantime, we will continue to get plenty of new beers & run online trade.

NEW RELEASES & FRESH STOCKS
FROM AUSTRALIA
Hargreaves Hill Russian Imperial Stout 750ml $36.00
Certainly not an ideal time of year for a release of this nature but its a welcomed one nonetheless & something you could easily hide away for the cooler months. Like the Imperial Stouts of old, this is heady & robust in profile, coming in at a whopping 12.5% abv. Masses of dark roasted malt & rich dark fruit with hop bitterness to balance & provide a platform with which to age this beauty.

Moondog Symbiotic Solipsism 330ml $6.50
Kooky collaborative brew with the fellows at Coffee Supreme. A malt focused, English style amber ale, however the addition of tart raspberries & coffee throws you for a loop. Unlike some of the lighter coffee beers of late, this has plenty of bittersweet roast, which oddly compliments the tart berry notes. You’ve been warned, kooky is an understatement!

FROM ENGLAND
Courage Russian Imperial Stout 275ml $8.50
Apparently the modern incarnation of the original Russian Imperial Stout brewed for Catherine The Great in 1781. While the original brewery (Barklay Perkins) has changed hands & names a number of times, it is believed the recipe has changed very little. History aside, this is an amazing brew. Exceptionally robust, yet perfectly balanced malt & hop profile.

FROM NEW ZEALAND
Epic BA IPA 500ml $16.50
A throwback to the IPAs of old but with a modern twist. The brewery’s Armageddon IPA has been aged in American Oak, where it picks up toasty oak, coconut & vanilla notes.

Epic Coffee & Fig Oatmeal Stout 750ml $24.00
Certainly an epicurean release & a very considered result. Delicate & creamy oatmeal stout base provides great support for the addition of coffee & fig, attributing dark bittersweet roast & dark fruity characters.

Epic Flying Nun Ale 500ml $10.00
Brewed exclusively for the 30th Anniversary of iconic Flying Nun Records, this modern style pale ale is hopped up with US Liberty, Cascade, Falconer’s Flight & local Australian Galaxy varieties.

Epic Larger Imperial Pilsner 500ml $16.50
The brewery like to do things big & this is no different. An imperial style pilsner ramped up with more robust hop character & higher abv than you expect for the style. Still clean & balanced just much larger!

FROM NORWAY
Haand Aquavit Porter 500ml $14.00
Big, rich & dark porter aged in aquavit barrels. Aquavit is a Norwegian spirit with herbs & spices, usually caraway &/or dill.

Haand Costa Rica 500ml $11.00
Traditional style porter given a modern twist with the addition of Costa Rican coffee beans. Robust in its dark & roasty malt character, however a possesses a delicate & somewhat light palate.

Nogne O & Bridge Rd India Saison 500ml $12.00
The original version of this collaborative brew, produced during a visit to Norway by the Bridge Rd brewer. Hopped with fruity Australian galaxy & stella varieties to compliment the earthy, dry saison yeast.

FROM USA
Moylans Old Blarney Barleywine 650ml $15.00
Rich barleywine style ale with layers of caramel & toffee malt, as well as subtle brandy notes & significant hop bitterness on the finish to balance.

Moylans Orange & Black 650ml $11.00
An American style black ale, dark & roasty with the addition of orange giving overt citrus notes that compliment the hop character you expect of the style.

Epic Barrel Aged Armageddon IPA 500ml $16.50
Like the IPAs of old, this has spent time in Oak barrels. Much like the regular Armageddon, this is still exceptionally clean malt-wise, allowing the hops to dominate, however maturation in American oak provides a very overt toasty, coconut & vanilla character.

Renaissance Discovery APA 500ml $10.00

Anderson Valley Imperial IPA 650ml $19.00

Anderson Valley Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout 650ml $12.00
Absolutely everything you expect of a West Coast style IPA, clean & light malt allowing the hops to dominate with a borderline aggressive bitterness on the finish.

Moylans Moylander DIPA 650ml $18.00
Noticing a theme here? Moylans love hops & they do such styles amazingly well! As the name states, this is a double, so we have double the malt & double the hops. Thick & resiny, big in every way.

Moylans Hopsickle Imperial IPA 650ml $20.00
ROGUE BRUTAL IPA
Its been a while between Rogue shipments but they are back with a bang, well kegs more specifically. This offering is certainly one of the brewery’s most popular & its easy to see why. Previously called brutal bitter, the name was somewhat recently changed to brutal IPA, which no doubt has piqued many people’s interests. Essentially with a foot in each camp, part English IPA, part US. Nice caramel & toffee malt, floral & fruity hop aroma with a robust, earthy bitterness on the finish.

If you don’t already have a growler bottle, they are $15 each & reusable, while a fill of Rogue Brutal IPA is $35
As always, there are a heap of great beers hitting the shelves, as well as an excellent growler offering from our Danish friend Mikkeller. Full details below. Also, we’ve been promising some big news, which we can now finally reveal!

BIGGER & BETTER
WE’RE MOVING!
Ok, so for those who frequent the store, this may not have been the best kept secret, but we are in fact moving stores very soon. The fact that our current premises is up for lease, means that the secret was especially difficult to keep. Regardless, we are very excited with what we have planned, all of which will be occurring over the next few months.

Firstly, the move is not far, in fact we will be relocating no more than 2km down the road towards the city, more specifically, on Bridge Rd in Richmond. There are many reasons for the move, which we see as an evolution & an exciting way to better promote craft beer. We will be operating a store as usual, with the shop itself a bit bigger, so we will certainly have a wider stock range than previously on offer. However, the most exciting aspect is that customers will also be able to enjoy their favorite craft beers on premise! We will have a great little outdoor courtyard area, which will operate as a beer garden, giving us greater scope for events & a more social feel. In addition to being able to purchase & consume our wide range of bottled beers on premise, we will offer around 4 different draught beer options, in keeping with our craft philosophy & rotating on a regular basis. Expect to see similar offerings to what we’ve had on growlers in the past.

While we hope that everyone is extremely excited by this news, it should be noted that the process for such an undertaking is somewhat laborious. As a result we will not be able to trade at the new premise straight away. Unfortunately, given that we will be vacating our current store around mid November & realistically won’t be ready to trade in Richmond until around January, there will be a notable absence of in store trade. However, it is important to note that you can still order online from us & we will continue to get exciting new beers as they are released. To make things easier for our regular in store customers, we will be offering free delivery for online orders in the area.

Note that in early November we will be having a moving sale, whereby all stock will be discounted! More on that in the coming weeks.

NEW WEBSITE
You may well have noticed that we launched our new website, which we have been working on for quite a while. We are really pleased with the result & hope you are too! Note that there may still be a few little tweaks made & kinks to iron out, so if you are having any issues please let us know. Also be aware that all relevant info on stock, growlers & tastings is now accessible via the site. Also, the blog is now fully integrated into the site itself, so we will no longer be tending to the old blogspot one.

NEW RELEASES & FRESH STOCKS

GROWLER FILLS
CURRENTLY FILLING – MIKKELLER DRAFT BEAR
Its unlike Mikkel to take a backward step & while this is a pilsner of sorts, its big & hopped to the max. Essentially an imperial pilsner at 8%abv, we have plenty of pilsner & carapils malt, which brings subtle honey sweetness, while the nose is packed with vibrant US hop aromas. The palate delivers more robust hop character from the use of Cascade & Amarillo varieties. Reminding us that this is a pilsner after all, we have a bitter but clean & cleansing finish.

If you don’t already have a growler, bottles are $15 each, while a fill of Mikkeller Draft Bear is $35.00

Up Next – Rogue Brutal IPA
